Why Columbus Humidity Makes Your AC Work Harder Than It Should

Columbus summers are more humid than most people realize — and that humidity is likely the reason your AC feels like it's not keeping up. Here's what's actually happening.

If you’ve lived in Columbus for more than one summer, you know the feeling: it’s 78°F inside, the AC is running, but the house just feels sticky and heavy. The thermostat says one thing, but your body says something else. Humidity is almost always the explanation — and it’s one of the most misunderstood parts of home comfort in Central Ohio.


Columbus Is More Humid Than People Expect

Ohio sits in a humid continental climate. Columbus averages relative humidity around 70–75% during July and August. That puts us consistently higher than cities like Denver (40–50%) or even Dallas, which has similar summer temperatures but less persistent humidity.

The Ohio River valley to our south pushes warm, moist air through Central Ohio for most of the summer. Combine that with the Olentangy and Scioto river corridors running through the city, and you have a region where the air holds a lot of moisture — even on days that don’t feel brutally hot.

That moisture is what makes a 78°F day in Columbus feel more uncomfortable than a 78°F day in Colorado.


How Your AC Handles Humidity (And Why It Sometimes Doesn’t)

Your air conditioner removes humidity as a byproduct of cooling. As warm air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses out of the air — the same way a cold glass sweats in summer. That condensate drains out of your system, and the air that blows back into your home is both cooler and drier.

The problem is that humidity removal depends on how long the air stays in contact with that cold coil. A properly sized AC system runs in long, steady cycles — it cools slowly, removing humidity consistently throughout the cycle.

An oversized AC system — one that’s too big for the house — cools the air temperature quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it’s had time to remove meaningful humidity. The house reaches the right temperature but stays muggy. This is called short-cycling, and it’s one of the most common comfort complaints we see in Columbus.


The Oversized AC Problem in Columbus

Oversizing is rampant in the HVAC industry, and Columbus is no exception. Contractors sometimes install larger systems because customers equate bigger with better, because it’s a way to pad margins, or simply because they didn’t do a proper load calculation.

Here’s how to tell if your AC might be oversized:

  • It reaches your set temperature quickly (within 10–15 minutes on a hot day)
  • It runs short cycles — on for a few minutes, off for a few minutes, repeat
  • The house cools down fine but feels sticky at temperature
  • You’ve had a new system installed but summer comfort actually feels worse than it used to

Replacing a 3-ton unit with another 3-ton unit without calculating the home’s actual load just repeats the problem. The right size for your Columbus home depends on square footage, ceiling height, insulation levels, window area and orientation, and several other factors. That calculation is called a Manual J — ask any contractor whether they’re doing one before you commit to an install.


What to Do When the AC Isn’t Enough

If your home is correctly sized and you’re still fighting humidity — especially in older Columbus homes or homes with a lot of basement square footage — a whole-home dehumidifier is worth serious consideration.

A standalone dehumidifier pulls moisture out of the air independently of your cooling system. It runs based on a humidity setpoint (we typically set them for 45–50% relative humidity) rather than temperature. The result is that your AC doesn’t have to do double duty, your home feels comfortable at higher temperatures, and you’re often running the AC less overall.

For Columbus homes specifically:

  • Finished basements are chronic humidity traps — a dehumidifier here makes a significant difference
  • Older homes with less-than-perfect vapor barriers or crawl spaces often feed moisture into living spaces
  • Homes with a lot of south or west-facing glass collect heat and humidity simultaneously in the afternoon

The Smart Thermostat Angle

Modern smart thermostats — Ecobee and Nest in particular — include humidity sensing and can run your AC fan independently to help manage moisture levels. They’re not a replacement for a properly sized system or a dedicated dehumidifier, but they add a layer of control that basic thermostats don’t have.

If you’re in Columbus and still running an older single-stage thermostat, this is a low-cost upgrade that can noticeably improve summer comfort.


What Proper Humidity Control Looks Like

A well-functioning Central Ohio home in summer should maintain:

  • Temperature: your set point, typically 72–76°F for most households
  • Relative humidity: 45–55%

When you’re above 60% relative humidity indoors — even at a comfortable temperature — you’ll feel it. Sticky skin, condensation on windows, musty smells, and accelerated mold growth in bathrooms and basements are all signs the humidity is too high.

If you’re consistently above 60% with the AC running, that’s the diagnostic starting point. The system is either the wrong size, there’s a mechanical issue (low refrigerant, dirty coil, restricted airflow), or the home’s envelope is introducing more moisture than the AC can keep up with.


A Quick Seasonal Note for Columbus Homeowners

The highest-humidity weeks in Columbus tend to be late June through mid-August. If you have a tune-up scheduled in spring, ask your technician to check your evaporator coil and condensate drain line specifically — both directly affect your system’s ability to remove humidity. A dirty evaporator coil doesn’t absorb moisture efficiently. A clogged drain line causes water to back up and, in worst cases, overflow into your home.

These are two-minute checks that prevent summer headaches.
